Training for IMoo - Week Twelve

Week Twelve: 3.18-3.24

In which everything still sucked ... but I was able to get some answers by the end of the week.

3.18

I started the week determined to have a better showing than the previous week, and it showed, by me successfully getting in my easy/harder/easy 5 miles. Also, thanks to the husband to getting out there with me.

3.19

I moved my ride (always a terrible idea), but I did get in my 2.7k swim. It also didn't go terribly for being the first swim back after a mini layoff. Oh hey, maybe all the thousands of meters I've put in this year so far are paying off ...

3.20

I got in my planned run - park loop done all out - and it, understandably and predictably, quite killed me. I did not, however, get in my ride. I somehow randomly get bike anxiety, and I don't know how or why, but it is a *thing* with me and I hate it. I also had a concert this evening (Shinedown show #9) and wanted to get up to Loveland early so totally justified not getting in the ride. *face palm*

3.21

Holy shit I'm old and concert hangover is a fucking thing. I didn't drink, but 7 hours of little food and most of it standing and singing and ugh. I am too old for this shit.

3.22

When I'm already in a blah mood, trying to mentally get myself up for a treadmill workout I hate anyway is not going to be a thing.

3.23

On the schedule for the day: 50 mile ride (on the trainer, to the IMoo course video). Written in my workout log notes for the day: I want to cry.

3.24

In which I say fuck it, I really need to get in my stupid 12 miler ... but wake up with (what feels like) a giant block of mucus in my throat. In which I say fuck it, and try running anyway. In which I get out a little over a mile before I give up and go back home.

*****

At least by Sunday I figured out that I was sick. But was it a bug that I'd been fighting for a while that finally came to fruition due to me not doing anything? Or did it develop because I wasn't doing anything? We'll never know ... and I'm currently still fighting it.

Training for IMoo - Week Eleven

Week Eleven: 3.11-3.17

Also known as the week in which everything (finally?) fell apart ... the only thing I kept doing consistently was my daily workout. Hooray.

3.11

Today was a planned off day given our friend leaving and a concert that night. It was actually good, too, because we were woken up AGAIN by the raccoons. We think they tried to get back in the house but couldn't due to the capsaicin. Also good: we had a critter company come out THAT DAY to put in a barrier so they can STOP LIVING IN MY F'ING HOUSE JEEZ.

3.12

Originally had a swim and run planned. With taking B to the airport (and being exhausted due to the concert the night before), I decided to shift the swim and just do the run. I had hill repeats scheduled at the Bluffs, and I did get those in (though it was windy AF).

2019_marbluffs
The hair and the skirt flying around wasn't just because I was running ...

3.13

In which Colorado got hit with a bomb cyclone ... with a lot of snow and a lot of wind. I knew this day would be shit weather (and was so thankful it wasn't a run day) so I specifically planned a trainer ride - Pain Cave with Coach Troy. But ... I just couldn't get motivated. I don't know if it was due to the weather, or the fact that the lights flickered a tiny bit in the morning (oh I don't want to start my workout if I can't finish it due to possibly losing power hurrdurr) ... but no. So I didn't do it.

3.14

In which I was supposed to run 5 miles and swim long. In which I did neither thing. Partially due to feeling like crap, and partially due to who knows what.

I did, however, have a run mobility assessment with Tim DeBoom, so that was good. Still need to work on glute activation ... but seriously, who DOESN'T? That was before the Skirt swim wear launch party ... in which I was ridiculous as per usual.

Seen here wearing the new High Dive one piece. Use SSA1079The for 15% off! Free exchanges/returns on swim for the rest of March!

3.15

In which I was supposed to ride 50 miles (ha didn't happen) and do the swim I had moved from Tuesday. I did actually drag my ass to the pool ... which was 68 degrees (that's a little cold). I attempted to do my long swim instead (100s instead of something crazy) and got 10 done before I called it.

3.16

In which I was supposed to run 10 miles and ... didn't. Is it because I've been sleeping poorly? Asleep late, awake late? Executive dysfunction?

3.17

In which I didn't bother swimming before picking up B from the airport ... and we both decided to scrap a ride.

*****

Just a terrible week. But if I look back at my logs and comments, I've been struggling for about a month. I'm super grateful to have held on that long and, as frustrating as it is, this crash wasn't altogether surprising. Because they happen with me/us.

I guess I'm just pissed that these are the status quo and oh I just can't seem to string together week after week of super solid training without my body/brain just going NOPE STOP ALL FOR A WHILE. Grumble.

Training for IMoo - Week Ten

Week Ten: 3.4-3.10

Still modifying the daily ... but a lot of that is due to other body issues (barista wrist, my right knee which is starting to act up a bit ...). Life is difficult and I keep adjusting and modifying and moving things around. Which I shouldn't be.

3.4

Had considered a bike on this day, but I also needed to do my treadmill speed set, and I'm thinking that set needs to be the only workout on the day right now. The original goal was to make it all the way through ... but fail. Made it through more than I have yet this year. I think the problem is, I'm trying to do it at paces I was hoping to hit six years ago and I am not the same athlete I was back then ...

3.5

Swim and the bike I had considered doing the day before. The swim was drill day - drills make longer swims go by so much faster - and I descended my 5x300 main set, so yay for that. The bike was another old MX set - over-unders. Went okay; may need to up trainer resistance. Or, since my bike finally got tuned, it was just running smoother. Who knows.

3.6

I had a Bluffs loop run that I tried to do ... but it was way too muddy to do. I was worried about my safety (I don't normally run on super muddy trails so I was totally not prepared in terms of footing or knowing how to run on them). I did, however, do my long swim of 50x50 and I wanted to quit a hundred times during it. Maybe because it was the first time in a long time I've done back to back swims. Who knows. But I didn't quit.

3.7

Long bike day. A bit of crotch soreness (so many miles already ... or body composition is making my bibs fit weird which UGH), but it was kind of fun doing most of my 40 miles to "Rocky IV."

2019_marstp
Plus I finally got a chance to wear my new Stomp the Pedal tank - an old teammate runs her own cycling kit brand and I loved this casual tank she came out with.

3.8

I in theory should have swam today ... but oh hey, it got moved. Instead ... just a four mile run of the easy-harder-easy variety. I kind of wanted to puke through most of it, but whatever.

3.9

The ride was an old Coach Troy video that I did a lot leading up to IMAZ (I swear most rides every week that year were: over-unders, TimeTrialPalooza, long ride) ... but I haven't done in a couple years. B started it with me, but he had some hamstring issues, so quit riding (absolutely the right call). There were parts of me that thought I went out too easy with my gearing, but by the final interval? Nope, paced it properly. I also did the swim I should have done the previous day - added in all out 25s as well as band work for the first time since probably 2017. Hoo boy was that fun.

3.10

Long run day. Had a step back in mileage and only did eight this week. We had a friend in town this weekend (part of the reason I didn't swim Friday was due to the timing of picking him up; was able to do so much Saturday because he was working (came out to work the Sabres/Avs game)) and decided to take him out to breakfast. So, I decided to go run to breakfast ... and kind of killed it. Definitely the fastest long run this year (still used HR for it, but yeah).

*****

Life is still a struggle, but I'm still mostly managing to get things in. I missed my first run this week, but it wasn't for lack of trying. Stupid mud. I kept thinking of ways I could have still gotten in a run, but when "Bluffs loop" is on the schedule and I can't run it due to mud (and that was the only feasible day available that I could have done it) ... well, not much else I can do. I think.

Maybe I've been overdoing it. Maybe I'm priming myself for a breakthrough. Maybe ... I need more sleep.

Weekly Numbers:
Swim: 6800m, 2:31:58
Bike: 73.66 mi, 4:30:20
Run: 15.48 mi, 2:53:37

Training for IMoo - Week Nine

Week Nine: 2.25-3.3

Still heavily modifying the daily, but decided to keep doing it through March. And probably will through IMoo.

This week was also probably the roughest I've had so far, in terms of a lot of factors. I was originally supposed to go out of town for the weekend for a mini vacation and therefore have my week heavily front-loaded ... but that didn't happen. There were also other extraneous factors that contributed to a heavy week of suckage ... read on.

2.25

Speed work day in the pool - the actual time it's been taking me to do the 1400 has stayed relatively consistent, but I did manage to get my second fastest 200 all out. That is what ultimately matters, so I'm happy with that. The ride was an old MX set - Mediums which ... ugh.

2.26

The story of this day starts the night before, really. I was supposed to pick up B from the airport Monday night, but his flight got in so late that he decided to Uber home so I wouldn't be completely useless the next day. We tossed around the idea of him coming in Tuesday morning ... but we had a plumber scheduled to come during the same window where I had a dentist appointment and his flight would get in right around there. No good. So, he HAD to get home Monday night.

I vaguely remember him crawling into bed ... but what I really remember is being woken up at 2am to some ungodly shrieking and other noises.

What I haven't mentioned in here is that we've been dealing with something in our walls. We know where the access point(s) is/are, but we haven't been able to definitively say *what* had invaded. The last time the critter guy was out he suggested buying straight capsaicin, putting it in a spray bottle with water, and spraying it around where we think whatever is getting in (since the hole found around Thanksgiving that was in theory covered up wasn't working since I'd seen insulation around the same area recently that had been pulled out).

Well, I guess it worked, as it pissed off/injured three GIANT FUCKING RACCOONS that had been living under the bay window in our dining room. Think of a Maine Coon cat. Yeah. Each one of those assholes was about that size.

When the noise woke us up, I first went down to investigate and yep, definitely coming from underneath the floor. I went back upstairs ... and then B came down with me with a flashlight and that's when we saw the raccoons scurrying across the lawn to the tree. Ugh.

Needless to say ... capsaicin works (and I've been spraying it about every three days to make sure they don't fucking come back ... and I haven't heard sounds in the walls since).

We were also completely exhausted the next morning ... so much so that, well, long story short, I wasn't tagging along with B on his layover to Costa Rica. And I ended up changing around a lot of my workouts the rest of the week.

IN THEORY I was supposed to run 4 miles - easy/harder/easy - and bike 30. Yeah. The bike got moved and I barely made it two miles because I was just. so. tired.

Fucking raccoons.

2.27

Swim and a ride. 2200 as 22x100 - my notes: "the eternal struggle. so rough." The ride was the Troy recovery/technique set which did ironically help perk me up some.

2.28

If I *had* gone on vacation ... I was going to do my long run early this morning, finish packing if need be, drop the bikes off at TriBella to get them in for a much needed tune (especially mine), and get to the airport.

Since I *didn't* ... four miles steady (ain't no way I was forcing my body to do any hard running this week). Also the long ride that was moved from Tuesday - 30 miles. Decided to ride to the park, do a few loops, ride back. Got to right before I would drop in to the park ... decided I wasn't enjoying myself at all (windy, cold, very mud-splattered) ... turned around ... and finished up on the trainer.

The bikes still went to their "spa", however, as that had been booked and still needed to get done.

3.1

Except for the daily, this was a GLORIOUS DAY OF REST. If I had been on vacation, it would have been a long day of flights and travel and I didn't want to stress about trying to get anything major in.

Also, from the week that I had had thus far ... so needed.

3.2

What should have been a glorious easy 4 miles in hot, humid Costa Rica turned into a chilly, early, trying-to-beat-the-snow (successfully!) 10 miles at home.

2019_firsttenmiler

We were supposed to get anywhere from 3-8 inches of snow starting ... sometime (7:45? noon? WHO KNOWS!) and I didn't particularly feel like slogging through snow for several hours, so I got this started pre-7am.

Not only did I beat the snow, but I somehow negative split the run. Score.

3.3

On past 3.03 days (main CO area code), I've gotten out on my bike. Or gone for a run. Or both.

Instead ... I woke up to several inches of snow (we ended up with about 4) and below-freezing temps. I had my long swim on the schedule (figured I could get it in after I got home from my trip which, as we know, didn't happen. sad face) so I woke up and just got it done before everyone else woke up and got on the road.

2500 with the main set 3x700. Holy crap are the longer intervals rough (first time I've done more than ... 500? I think? ... this year). This swim was definitely probably the slowest 2500 I've done this year, but whatever. It got done and I survived the week from hell.

*****

Holy jeebus was this week hard. As I've documented here, I've been getting shit sleep (and I finally replaced one of my favorite pillows in desperation to see if it would help) and being woken up by shrieking banshee raccoons at 2:30 am (why is it always in the 2 o'clock hour? why?) did NOT help.

As much as that incident was terrible, we both remarked how grateful we were to have had it happen since at least we now KNOW what's been making noises in our house.

Sleep would have been nicer, though.

Motivation has been tough - I'm not going to lie. I've mentioned here in the past that February is almost always a tough month - it's almost guaranteed I'll have a dip in numbers - and that didn't happen. I'm just clawing and fighting right now to not have the dip come this month instead.

Weekly Numbers:
Swim: 6100m, 2:19:42
Bike: 62.92 mi, 4:02:38
Run: 16.09 mi, 3:07:34

February Round Up

February is shorter than January, and yet I had bigger numbers. I didn't fall apart (completely) in February like I usually do. Hooray!

Swimming: 25600m (15.9 mi)
Cycling: 290.81 mi
Running: 59.08 mi
Strength: 28 sessions (4:39)
Other: one walk (1:02), one session yoga (:16)

So much swimming. SO MUCH and it's only going to keep increasing. I'm keeping an eye on my shoulder (as it sometimes gets cranky) and so far, so good.

Sweet Cheeks, my bicycle, is currently at the spa (that is, in the shop getting tuned) and I'm quite thankful to be able to have a few days off her. I'm starting to add on to my long rides and it's definitely a struggle. 20-25 miles? No problem. Start getting longer than that and nope. Hopefully that will turn around soon.

As for running ... I actually cut a run short this week (which you'll read about on Wednesday) so I should have been over 60 miles for the month. I also hit 100 miles for the year in probably the quickest time ever. Silly half-marathon training (which I actually finally signed up for so yay for that).

Not a lot of extraneous stuff which I hope to change ... but it's finding the time to do so. Although the weather is NOT helping that. Would I love to head up to the mountains/foothills and hike and/or snowshoe some? Yes! I would! But do I want to deal with terrible roads and even worse drivers? Not in the slightest. C'mon spring ...

February is usually a rough month and it definitely started smacking me around in the last week or so of it, but I have come out the other side. Here's hoping the strength comes back in March ...
